But things escalated in September when it was revealed that the comedian was suing FremantleMedia, the producers of Britain’s Got Talent, over a ‘data protection breach.’Īccording to the legal documents, Walliams is claiming damages for loss of earnings, distress, psychiatric harm, and for loss of control of his personal information. He has since been replaced on the show by Bruno Tonioli. In November last year, the former Britain’s Got Talent judge came under fire for making offensive comments about two contestants during a taping for a BGT audition show at London’s Palladium in January 2020.ĭavidapologised for the comments and subsequently quit his role on Britain’s Got Talent. Anyhow, back to the plot - and if you do want to compare - I feel this is kind of like bumping of Miss Honey at the end of Matilda and then having Matilda reflect that at least she is in a better place because of her. It’s been a turbulent twelve months for David Walliams. I know a lot of people compare Williams to Roald Dahl, and I personally think the stories and style of his books tries a bit too hard to emulate Dahl, but for me in readability they miss the mark. It made my son cry and I fail to see what it added to the story. The idea that she would have chosen to leave her son seems at odds with the relationship he has drawn. Many other characters are lost along the way but do not have any emotional significance. The way David Williams deals with this plot is very surface and dismissive, despite seeming to build a strong sense of the relationship and care between mother and son. *Big Spoiler Alert* I didn’t understand the need for the boys mother to have to sacrifice herself at the end. Also, I had to stop reading before the end because my son found the story line too upsetting. I just cut them out after a while, I didn’t find they added anything to the lyrical sound or the story. I got really bored with the long pieces of dialogue and constant written noises that are repetitions of the same sounds throughout the book. I found this book repetitive and tedious to read to my children.
